Isimila, is located within a korongo (erosion gulley) on the Iringa plateau in Tanzania and has long been recognized as a site of international importance for understanding the behavioral complexity and plasticity of our hominid ancestors.

One of the primary reasons for the importance of Isimila is the unique artifact record for a site outside the Rift Valley system present in both primary and secondary contexts consisting of thousands of hand axes - including enigmatic giant hand axes

Day 1 Isimila Stone Age site

Traveling by coaster or min bussĀ  to Isimilia Stone Age Site,some 20km from Iringa (40minutes) is the important Isimila stone age site.you will see stone-age tools and wander through an amazing canyon with picturesque limestone pillars.The tour of the site begins at the little museum where a guide gives a brief introduction to the formation of the site and explains more about the fossils and tools that are displayed. The tour then continues into the canyon down a steep footpath. Once there the guide will show you some of the beds where the tools were found and explained how the rock towers were formed. The walk is very scenic, the earth has a warm reddish tint and it is also a good spot to see birds.
