Kilimanjaro Treks (Machame Route)

Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro along the beautiful scenic Machame Route with Lauwo Adventures.

Also known as the ‘Whisky Route’ as this is the most relaxing route where you and your body have extra time to enjoy and acclimatize to the altitude. This method of trekking helps achieve a high success rate in making it all the way to the summit. That’s almost a guarantee to make it!

Accommodation on the Machame Route is in tents that the Lauwo Adventures crew will transport and pitch for you.

You will climb through magnificent forests, through moorland zones ascending to the Shira Plateau. Your trek will then take you through the Southern Icefields and onto the very top of Uhuru Peak.

The feel of achievement and exhilaration that you will experience standing 5,895m above sea level will stay with you forever!

Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1634 m/5363 ft) to Machame Camp (2834 m/9300 ft):

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Today your expedition with Lauwo Adventures Kilimanjaro begins.

Your driver will bring you to the entrance of the Kilimanjaro National Park: The Machame Gate. The drive takes approx. 50 minutes, travelling through the village of Machame. Here you’ll need to be registered. Please ensure you have your passport number ready.

Your guide Henry Lauwo will select his entire climbing team who will carry all the equipment and your bags up the mountain.

The trek starts off with a beautiful and relaxing walk through the tropical rainforest. Along the way you may see colobus monkeys as well as many colourful wild birds. Lunch will be along the way, then at the end of the afternoon you will arrive at the Machame Camp. The porters will already have the camp set up with a snack and hot drinks are waiting you. After sunset, enjoy your evening meal prepared by your porters and your first night under the stars on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Machame Camp (2834 m/9300 ft) to Shira camp (3749 m/12300 ft)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Following a hearty breakfast, you will depart Machame Camp and the rainforest, trekking over the many hills that surround Kilimanjaro, all the way to the edge of the former Shira volcano.

Along the way, enjoy the amazing views, as you are above the tree line, overlooking the valley below. At the end of the afternoon, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp for a well-earned rest, dinner and sleep, ready for tomorrow.

Hiking time: Approx. 5-6 hours

Day 3: Shira camp (3749 m/12300 ft) to Barranco camp (3901 m/12800 ft)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Today we will depart the Shira Plateau and trek up to the grand Lava Tower (4572 meter/15000 feet).

Today’s trekking is very important for acclimatization to help prepare your body for the climb to the summit.

From Lava Tower, we will slowly descend again to the Barranco Camp at 12,800 feet.

Today will feel like the longest day of the week and you will be very happy when you reach the camp at the end of this afternoon.

Time to re charge with your evening meal and especially your overnight rest.

Habitat: Semi-desert

Distance: 10 km’s

Hiking time: 6 – 8 hours
Duration: 1 day

Day 4: Barranco camp (3900 m/12800 ft) to Karanga camp (3963 m/13000 ft)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
After a good night’s rest and hearty breakfast, today will see you amaze yourself by ascending a 300-meter wall!

Behind Barranco Camp stands the 300-meter steep Barranco Wall. Yep, you are going up there.

At first view it might look as an impossible adventure, however this thought is soon gone, as you stand in wonder and take in the breathtaking view from the top of the wall!

Next you will wander along some friendly slopes before reaching the Karanga Camp for the night.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4600m/15091 ft) to the summit (5896 m/19343 ft) Then descending to Mweka Camp (3100 m/10170 ft)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
Today you’ll experience a short walking day as we depart Karanga Camp for Barafu Camp.

At this point we should arrive at the east side of Mt Kilimanjaro just after lunch time, or perhaps enjoy lunch there depending on the mornings progress.

Today is also the best day to relax to prepare for your summit day.

After an early dinner, it will also be an early bed time as we will be departing around midnight for a truly special experience!

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3100 m/10170 ft) to Mweka Gate (1828 m/6000 ft)

Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 00255 Tanzania
This is your final trek day, you will walk through the lush forest and through misty rain.

The walk will be approx 3-4 hours with lunch along the way before arriving at the exit: Mweka Gate.

Here you’ll sign out at the ranger’s office. A driver will be awaiting your arrival to transport you back to the hotel in Moshi.
