Stop At: Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya Historical Park Pratuchai, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand
A must-see temple in Ayutthaya, Wat Phra Mahathat is the oldest temple in Ayutthaya. He is known for his Buddha's head stuck in a banyan (local tree). Legend has it that when the Burmese beheaded all Buddhas, one of the heads would have rolled to the foot of a tree that would have collected it in its roots. Today, entangled in the roots of the tree, Buddha's head is sacred. Buddhists and monks have always worshiped her. Built in 1384, Wat Phra Mahathat has the "prang" (the term used in the religious architecture of Thailand for a particular type of sanctuary tour), the oldest in the city. Strongly affected by the Burmese attack, Wat Phra Mahathat was almost completely destroyed (almost all Buddha statues were decapitated).
