Winter Tulips & Windmill Private Tour

This is a genuinely backroads tour, where the focus is on having a relaxing and authentic day out in the country side where we avoid tourist traps and cliches.

The tulips greenhouse we visit is not open to the public and Rory (the guide) happens to be friends with relatives of the owner.

The windmill we visit, while open to the public, is not on the itinerary of any big tour companies and get very few tourists. It's run by local volunteers who're always happy to chat with my guests and really answer all their questions.

We'll also pass through two lovely rural villages, stop in the larger town of Monnickendam, and generally take the road less traveled!

Stop At: Molen de Nachtegaal, Hobrederweg 4a, 1462 LJ Middenbeemster The Netherlands

We'll visit this original working windmill from the late 1600s. Rory, the guide will bring you inside and all the way to the top. We'll also likely get chatting to one or two of local miller volunteers who run it.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Avenhorn, Avenhorn, Koggenland, North Holland Province

We'll visit a private, commercial tulips greenhouse. They grow about 100,000 tulips per week. This is not the famous Keukenhof gardens - that's only open for 7 weeks of the year in Spring.

There is an extra €50(total, not per person) for this. The owner of the greenhouse will give the guided tour and you can pay him this money directly in cash.

Stop At: Monnickendam, Monnickendam, North Holland Province

We'll visit the unspoiled harbour town of Monnickendam, with architecture largely from the 1600s. The next town over is Volendam, which is where all the large tour buses go. Monnickendam is gorgeous and we'll be the only tourists.

Rory will give a short guided tour and we have the option of stopping for coffee and Dutch apple pie at a cafe there.

Pass By: Ransdorp, Ransdorp, North Holland Province

We'll drive through the dainty and historic rural village of Ransdorp.

Stop At: 1026 CD Durgerdam, Netherlands

We'll stop at this lovely dike village, at a dike on the edge of the IJsselmeer Lake, and Rory the guide, will explain the eternal Dutch battle with water.
