Stop At: Hagia Sophia Museum / Church (Ayasofya), Ayasofya Square, Sultanahmet, Istanbul 34122 Turkey

Hagia Sophia, was constructed by the Byzantines between 532-537 A.D. and was the biggest church of the Byzantine Empire. When Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. Now it’s a museum and constantly busy with visitors who come to admire its impressive dome and glittering mosaics.

With its stunning dome and six minarets, the Sultanahmet Mosque-better known to foreigners as the Blue Mosque- forms an impressive feature of the Istanbul skyline, was built in Ottoman era in 1616 and is still being used as a mosque.

The Basilica Cistern which consists of 336 columns was built by the Byzantines in 532 AD to store the water underground where water was brought here by series of aquaducts that ran from the Belgrade Forest. At the far end of the accessible part of the cistern, two bas-reliefs in the shape of Medusa heads can be seen serving as column bases.
