From the courtyard take a short stroll to the viewing platform where you can admire panoramic views of Windermere through coloured panels the way Victorian way. Take in views to both the north and south of Lake Windermere. Listen out for the Aeolian wind harp on a blustery day and learn about the buildings colourful history.

Home of the Cavendish Family through the generations, never been bought or sold but passed by inheritance through just three families: the Prestons, the Lowthers and the Cavendishes Each generation leaving its impression by either altering the landscape or by changing the house by adding, refacing, embellishing or even rebuilding, as happened to the New Wing after the disastrous fire of 1871.

Levens Hall has grown from a stark, imposing Pele Tower built c1250-1300, into a warm and welcoming family home. Marvel at this beautiful privately-owned house and gardens, home to the world's oldest topiary gardens and centre of a thriving 9,500-acre agricultural estate which provides much of the produce used in Levens Kitchen cafe.

Sizergh has been home to the Strickland family for over 760 years, and for many of those years the family played a major role in national events. This stately home and garden at Helsington are located about 4 miles south of Kendal. The core of the castle is a 14th-century pele tower and hall, but a superb Tudor house was built around the tower, with wings flanking a central courtyard. The castle, a grade I listed building, is in the care of the National Trust along with its garden and estate.
