Rocky Mountain High Spectacular

A Day to visit the wilder, more remote but most beautiful scenery; to learn about it’s stone walls, about sheep, of how the Lake District was formed; of Roman, Saxon, Viking and Norman occupations; to visit a Roman Fort , a wonderful castle and many other attractions.

In the footsteps of Roman legions and travellers over the centuries, our day begins on the traditional route through the Langdale Valleys and climbing the wild terrain of Wrynose Pass. This breathtaking mountain road takes us west beside the cascading crystal clear waters of the Duddon River before the thrilling ascent of Hardknott Pass – England’s steepest road.

It’s location, above the River Esk affords stunning views of the valley and Sca Fell. Here we stop for lunch and enjoy the fabulous gardens. Indeed John Ruskin decribed the scene as “the gatewayto heaven” The World Owl Trust is here and there is the opportunity to view some of the rarest and most exotic species of owls. Most afternoons on the castle lawns the owls and other birds of prey are displayed in flight and the work of the trust is explained.

If you wish to enter the castle itself then you will see furniture of great antiquity and collections of rare porcelain and silver and the loveliest tapestries. Be careful here the tapestry room is haunted and some people say they can sense an “eerie presence” so do not go alone!!!
