WINTER SKILLS COURSE

GLENCOE & BEN NEVIS: SCOTLAND

17 to 22 February 2019

Some say that the Himalaya is good training for a Scottish winter.

Join Entabeni in February 2019 for an introduction into winter skills

in the area known as the home of Scottish mountaineering. Starting

on Stob Coire nan Lochan and, weather dependent, ending on Ben

Nevis, the highest point of the British Isles; this course provides the

fundamentals to safely move through technical ground in winter

mountainous environments. Aligned to the South African MDT

Mountain Leader syllabus, participants will gain many of the skills

and most of the logbook days required for the attainment of

Mountain Leader

Programme Outline

The valley (glen) of Glencoe is iconic in winter mountaineering.  The mountains are reasonably accessible and almost always in  peak condition in February, so good winter climbing is almost  guaranteed. Participants will be collected in Glasgow (train station  or airport) and driven to Fort William. The next morning, we will  head into Broad Gully on Stob Coire nan Lochan, for an  introductory day covering the basics, including avalanche  awareness and self-arrest. There is an option of a Grade 1 winter  climb on Dorsal Arrête on this day. Day 2 – 5 will be based on  Glencoe, Ben Nevis (Carn Mor Dearg Arete), Ballachulish, and  other Munroes in the area, depending on conditions and  avalanche risk on the day. A typical day departs the accommodation at 07:00 to return at  about 18:00; both in the dark. Depending on the conditions, we  will spend a night in a snow-hole we have constructed. The days  are very physical, and a high level of fitness is required. Each  participant must provide their own equipment to the appropriate  standard and be able to manage themselves in a cold mountain  environment.
