Via Ferrata

If you’re looking for a challenge, why not give Via Ferrata a go? The Via Ferrata in the Lake District is situated in Honister pass and offers two routes of varying difficulty and exposure. ‘Via Ferrata’ originated in the Dolomites in Northern Italy, and it means ‘Iron Road’ or ‘Iron Way’. They were used strategically by the military for moving soldiers and munitions through the mountains.

Honister slate mine is home to the UK’s first Via Ferrata and it offers a fantastic opportunity to experience exposure usually only experienced through climbing and mountaineering. We use lanyards to clip to the steel cable that runs from bottom to top. Iron ‘staples’ and sections of ladders have been installed to make progress easier.
