Explore the site of one of Hawaiis largest restored temples (heiau). As advised by his priest, King Kamehameha the Great built Puukohola Heiau and dedicated it to the war god Kukailimoku to help in his effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The massive temple, built between 1790 and 1791, overlooks the spectacular Kohala Coast and is one of the last sacred structures built in Hawaii before Western influence. You will marvel at your guides story of how the temple was constructed by hand and if youre here during winter or spring, you just might see humpback whales frolicking in waters below.
