depending on whose forces occupied the area, was originally a military parade ground and the focal point of the city. In 1851, the
space was renamed for Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of New
Orleans during the War of 1812 and seventh president of the
United States.

Overlooking the crescent bend of the Mississippi River, the St. Louis
Cathedral is the spiritual heart of New Orleans.

Faulkner lived here for six months, sharing the building with artist William Spratling. The two got up to all sorts of mischief in the French Quarter, firing BBs at pedestrians and brewing bathtub
gin while they composed “Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles,” a satirical work based on the 1920s literary scene.
