Johnston Lake

Not to be confused with Johnston Canyon, this calm lake near Minnewanka is great for swimming, paddleboarding, and walking trails around its shoreline. A favorite of locals, especially in summer evenings.

Johnston Lake is a serene, forest-fringed gem nestled just off the Lake Minnewanka loop in Banff National Park, easily reached by car, bike, or Roam bus. Its calm, glacier-fed waters reflect the towering peaks of Cascade and Mount Rundle, creating a mirror-like backdrop in early morning and late afternoon. A well-maintained 3 km loop trail winds gently around the lake, staying mostly flat with only minor elevation changes - an ideal outing for families, casual hikers, or anyone seeking a peaceful nature stroll. Along the way, interpretive signs share insight into the ecology and geology of the area, while benches and picnic tables dot the shoreline, offering perfect spots to rest, have a snack, or simply soak in the views.

One of the trail’s hidden treasures is the historic Billy Carver hermit cabin, built in 1910 and tucked away in the woods - exploring it feels like a step back into a quieter era. A small sandy beach offers opportunities to dip toes in the chilly water or launch a kayak, canoe, or SUP (with a permit), and a rinse station by the day-use area helps prevent invasive species spread. Wildlife is often part of the experience - ducks and songbirds flit through the trees, squirrels chase through the undergrowth, and larger mammals like elk sometimes wander nearby in the evenings. In winter, the loop transforms into a tranquil snowshoe or winter hike, with hard-packed snow and icy lake vistas under a quiet, frosty sky. Close to Banff but feeling worlds apart, Johnston Lake offers a year-round escape filled with natural beauty, history, and tranquility.

Johnston Lake is a quiet, scenic retreat nestled in a forested corner of Banff National Park, just off the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive. Despite its proximity to the town of Banff, Johnston Lake feels tucked away, offering a more tranquil and less crowded alternative to the larger, more famous lakes in the park. The lake is relatively small and shallow, fed by glacial runoff and surrounded by thick pine forest, with sweeping views of surrounding peaks including Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain. Its calm, emerald-green waters are often smooth and reflective, especially in the early morning or late evening when the breeze settles and the alpine light casts a warm glow across the shoreline.

Johnston Lake

A gentle 3-kilometer trail loops around the lake, making it an accessible and rewarding walk for visitors of all ages. The trail is mostly flat, winding through shaded woodlands, open meadows, and alongside quiet coves. There are several rustic benches, picnic tables, and lookout points along the route, where hikers can pause and admire the views or listen to the sounds of birds and wind rustling through the trees. In summer, a small sandy beach area at the lake’s southern edge becomes a popular spot for sunbathing, paddling, and wading, though the water remains cold due to its glacial source.

Johnston Lake is also notable for its connection to Banff’s early history. Tucked in the woods along the loop trail is the remains of a tiny log cabin known as Billy Carver’s hermit hut, built by a reclusive settler who lived alone in the wilderness in the early 20th century. This quiet historical relic adds a unique sense of place and storytelling to the walk, linking the serene present with the rugged, self-reliant past.

Canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are allowed on Johnston Lake, and its calm waters are ideal for beginner paddlers or those looking for a peaceful float. A Parks Canada rinse station is located nearby to protect the lake from invasive aquatic species, reinforcing the importance of conservation in such a delicate ecosystem. Wildlife sightings are frequent in this area - birds such as loons, grebes, and swallows are commonly seen, while deer and elk occasionally appear along the trail, particularly in the quiet hours of the day.

In winter, Johnston Lake becomes a serene snow-covered haven, ideal for snowshoeing or walking with microspikes. The frozen surface of the lake often supports a network of tracks from animals and adventurers alike, and the silence of winter enhances the feeling of seclusion and peace. Whether you visit in the warmth of summer or the stillness of winter, Johnston Lake offers a beautifully balanced experience - easy to access, rich in scenery and history, and surrounded by the timeless grandeur of the Canadian Rockies.
