Pileated Woodpeckers in Canada's Rocky Mountains

Female Pileated Woodpecker is a very large woodpecker with white stripes on the face continuing down the neck and a red crest. Females have a red crest like the males but don't have the red cheek stripe. The Male Pileated Woodpecker is a large woodpecker with a heavy bill and bright red crest and a red stripe on the cheek. Pileated Woodpeckers are forest birds that require large, standing dead trees and downed wood. Forests can be evergreen, deciduous, or mixed and are often old.
